One Million Trees…and beyond
Yesterday, we went tree planting in Indang, Cavite. This tree planting activity is a part of the Green for Life: One Million Trees…and beyond Project (OMT) of the Lasallian family in the Philippines through the Lasallian Institute for Environment. The tree planting sites are all over the Philippines and it aims to plant one million trees by 2011 which started back in 2006. As of now, there are a total of 743,939 seedlings planted across the country. Once the goal of one million is reached, the counting would stop but the planting would continue as the project title suggests, “One Million Trees…and beyond”.
De La Salle University’s Professional Organizations of Business and Economics (PrOBE) took part in this project yesterday. OMT participated in Bringing Kaong Back 4: Isang Sama-Samang Pagtatanim in Brgy. Tambo Malaki, Indang, Cavite. I was one of the representatives for our organization, Young Entrepreneurs’ Society – DLSU (YES). We planted Kaong seedlings in the area, some were assigned in the forest and we were assigned in a pomelo plantation. Kaong (Sugar Palm) tree, locally known as Irok, is indigenous in Indang, Cavite. According to the speaker, Kaong is good watershed tree plus like the coconut tree, all of its parts has uses. Kaong is in fact Indang’s crop for the One Town, One Project of the Department of Trade and Industry. Read the rest of this entry »
A Taste of Imus at Cafe Marcello Bar and Restaurant
Before I proceed to other places, I believe that I must show you my hometown first.
Let me take you to the Flag Capital of the Philippines – Imus, Cavite! Of course, I know you know by now, what our first destination is all about (and you are starting to drool!!
). Let’s go and eat at Cafe Marcello Bar and Restaurant!! Cafe Marcello is a known restaurant in Imus. Celebrities and Politicians dine here when they are in town. And Cafe Marcello was also featured in QTV’s Balikbayan when Christian Bautista guested in the said TV show.
The Baldomero Aguinaldo Shrine
Another historical museum in Kawit that you could visit aside from the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine is the Baldomero Aguinaldo Shrine in Binakayan Kawit, Cavite. I’ve been seeing this place since way back in my elementary days. But it was only last June 13 that I decided to pay a visit since there was also a history appreciation talk there that day in celebration of Indepedence Day.
Baldomero Aguinaldo is a first cousin of Emilio Aguinaldo and he is one of the three Aguinaldos who became generals of the Philippine Revolution. Baldomero Aguinaldo was also elected as President when the Katipunan Chapter in Kawit was converted into the Magdalo Council. Baldomero Aguinaldo is also one of the signatories of the Biak na Bato Republic. And he was the secretary of War and Public Works of the First Philippine Republic. These are just some of the positions he held.
“This restored historical edifice was originally built in 1906, and served as the official residence of Gen. Baldomero Aguinaldo and his family. Typical of the period house, the structure is made of Philippine hard wood, particularly Molave and Narra. It was designed to provide excellent ventilation evidenced by its high and wide windows and numerous ventanillas that reach the floor level.
Common among the early houses, its groundfloor was used for storing farm produce, woods and as a place where chicken laid eggs. The history museum showcases important relics and memorabilia of the late revolutionary hero. The groudfloor also accomodates various photographic exhibits and peices of furniture.” (National Historical Institute)
Appreciating History and Cavite
Last June 13, I went to Baldomero Aguinaldo Shrine in Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite to attend a lecture on appreciating history. This lecture was held in celebration of the 112th Indepedence Day.

The speaker for the lecture was Dr. Emmanuel Calairo, the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts in De La Salle University – Dasmarinas. Majority of the attendees of the lecture were 4th year High School Students from Binakayan National High School.

The lecture focused on appreciating history in Cavite. Dr. Calairo says that we are lucky because we could see history around us. Dr Calairo was referring to the many historical markers around Cavite, shrines, museums and ancestral houses. Not only that, but we are also surrounded by descendants of people who played a huge part in history, the katipuneros. In fact, the youngest child of Lagislao Diwa, the person behind the idea of the first triangle system of KKK, still lives today. Read the rest of this entry »
Castel’s Corner Cafe: A Treat on the Budget
June 24, Manila Day – of course I had no classes that day. It was a very very boring afternoon.

Good thing I still have some money left! Yey!
It was the perfect chance to try out that Cafe’ I saw last summer – Castel’s Corner Cafe.

I wasn’t really expecting that much since the place is really small. Plus, they had a sign outside on what’s today’s student meal – so I thought it was a carinderia of some sort.

Let’s go inside! I like the interior of Castel’s – it’s very warm and homey. And because the place is small, it really feels like it’s as if your at a friend’s house. Read the rest of this entry »
